Flexibility of the English language
Submitted by EnglishMania on
One of the key features of the English language is the willingness to accept new words and phrases from other languages and of course to create new words itself. English is very relaxed when it comes to evolving which has allowed the language to be very flexible. This helps keeps it modern and relevant and helps spread its influence.
To give just one (technically two) examples, before the late 20th Century there was no such word as ‘email’ simply because there was no such thing. It is now of course a very common phrase that has been absorbed by many cultures and languages. And with the invention of the word ‘email’, the phrase ‘snail mail’ - to indicate that old fashioned ways of sending mail were very slow – was introduced.
This flexibility means English is able to adapt very quickly to cultural and social changes. In fact new words and phrases come along far too quickly for dictionaries to keep up!
